A new strategy has been developed for the synthesis of C-aryl glycosides based on a xanthate-mediated free radical addition-cyclization sequence of an acetophenone xanthate to a vinylic carbohydrate followed by aromatization. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
