Transient growth of energy and aeroelastic stability of ground vehicles

Abstract

Transient growth of energy is shown to be possible in the lateral dynamics of passenger cars. This mechanism might be generated during one vehicle overtaking another. Starting from a simple linearized quasi-steady model, which couples the lateral displacement and the yaw angle of the vehicle, the transient growth appears when an initial condition in the yawing rate is applied.
