Dimensionnement à la fatigue polycyclique de structures soudées

Abstract : A numerical calculation method is developed to predict the behaviour of arc-welded steel structures submitted to high cycle fatigue. The method proposes the use of a unique S-N design curve, whatever the geometry of the structure and the applied loading. The determination of the design stress S and the use of the S-N curve allow the fatigue life of any structure to be determined. The design stress S is defined from the geometrical stress state obtained at the hot spot of the structure by a linear elastic finite element calculation based on the thin shell theory. Meshing rules are established for the welded connection. They can be applied methodically to any welding situation. For most of the cases encountered in practice, the design stress is defined as the maximum principal geometrical stress amplitude. Nevertheless, in the general case, S is a linear relation between the maximum shear stress amplitude and the maximum hydrostatic pressure. The method is directly applicable by the designers. It has been validated on numerous arc-welded automobile components and on results of studies concerning multiaxial fatigue found in the literature.
